Amp Up Your Walk!
January is national walk your pet month! It's a great time to start a healthy resolution like walking with your dog all year round.
Walking provides the obvious benefits of being a great outlet to your dog's energy, aiding in training, providing mental and physical stimulation, feeding their natural exploratory tendencies and, of course, encouraging much needed social interaction. It also is a great way for the two of you to spend some time together. Here are a few of our tips to make walks even better this year!
1. Change it up! To make walks more interesting for you and your dog, travel off the traditional path (so to speak) and take a different route that may not be one you frequent.
2. Go to a friends house or visit a dog playmate. Call ahead and get together with another dog friend for some playtime. Taking a walk with a dog friend can make it more exciting, while providing a great bonding and social experience for dogs. Bring toys and treats to reward your pup during playtimes or training moments.
3. Take a spin. If you have a particularly active breed and the streets are clear of any snow or ice (if you live in a cold area of the country) consider hopping on your bike and connecting your best friend with the appropriate leash and halter, hit the streets in stride. If he is particularly active and can handle the long strides, this will be great exercise for you both and a new way to change up a daily walk.
Be sure the walk time is appropriate for your pooch. It's been downright cold this winter in certain areas. Be sure to check your dog’s paws after the walk for any issues. Take along plenty of water for you both, as well as a few treats to encourage and reward your best walking buddies!
