The Assembly Line of Life: How Your Dog's Health and Vitality Depends on Amino Acids

Your dog’s hair, skin, eyes, muscles and organs are all made from protein. But protein doesn’t just happen in your buddy’s body. It’s built in a kind of assembly line that has about 20 crucial steps, each of which depends on the availability of a specific molecule called an amino acid. Your dog’s body makes half of these amino acids itself. But there are ten that need to be provided daily by the food he eats. These are called the 10 “Essential Amino Acids,” because if any of them go missing, the whole protein assembly line is limited.

The essential amino acids your dog must get in his food.

  1. Arginine
  2. Histidine
  3. Isoleucine
  4. Leucine
  5. Lysine
  6. Methionine
  7. Phenylalanine
  8. Threonine
  9. Tryptophan
  10. Valine

Your dog's body can't store amino acids in the same way it stores carbohydrates and fats. It needs a fresh supply every day. So check your dog food to see if it delivers high quality protein like the chicken rich formulations of Bil-Jac which are processed properly for the dog to utilize the amino acids.

Just as important, check to see if this protein comes from meat or vegetable products. As animal nutrition experts we believe the best way for your furry friend to get these essentials is through meat and organ meats. Animal proteins from muscle meat and organs is easy for dogs to digest and provide well-balanced amino acids enough for efficient protein synthesis. The same can’t be said for most plant proteins. The amino acids are not well-balanced in plants, and dogs don’t digest them as naturally.

Starting with a quality protein source.

Muscle and organ meats provide good digestible sources of protein and should be the main ingredients. Bil-Jac uses a combination of real chicken and real chicken organs in our formula to create Bil-Jac's proper blend of proteins. Believe it or not, Bil-Jac uses 25 pounds of real chicken to make a 30-pound bag of our Adult Select Super Premium Dry Dog Food.

Many amino acids are sensitive to heat damage.  That’s where Bil-Jac shines.  Bil-Jac gently and slowly cooks and dries our kibbles to help protect the key nutrients, like amino acids, provided by the fresh chicken and chicken organs.  This is very different from other dog food manufacturers who use a high-temperature, high pressure process, called extrusion, that can damage these nutrients.

In fact, Bil-Jac is scientifically balanced to meet your dog's protein-building needs — including guaranteed minimum amounts of leucine and lysine to help rebuild muscle tissue; arginine to support the immune system; and methionine for effective cell replication and healthy skin and coat.
